INFLUENCE AT A YOUNG AGE
Amelia Earhart had a very adventurous spirit. As a kid, Amelia would spend hours playing with her sister Grace Muriel Earhart. They would climb trees, slide down a hill on a sled, and hunt rats with a rifle. Amelia was classified as a tomboy in her age.
Amelia's father wanted to interest her in flying, so he took both her and Grace to a fair in Iowa to see an airplane. Amelia was not impressed by her first sight, she described the airplane as "a thing of rusty wire and wood and not at all interesting." Amelia and her sister received home schooling from their grandmother and a governess when their parents moved to Des Moines and they remained in Atchison. They did not attend public school until the family came back together in Des Moines, and Amelia was entering 7th grade.

Amelia Earhart was born to Samuel "Edwin" Stanton Earhart (1867-1930) and Amelia "Amy" Otis Earhart.(1869–1962) Edwin worked for the Rock Island Railroad as a lawyer.
